What are Dangerous conditions alerts?

Dangerous Conditions alerts keep you and your group safe by providing real-time, location-based notifications for life-threatening weather events. Whether it is a tornado warning, flash flood, or wildfire, HeyPolo ensures you and your group have the critical information to act immediately. This feature is available only to US users.

NOTE: You need push notifications enabled on your mobile in order to receive these Dangerous condition alerts.

How to enable them:

On iOS (iPhone & iPad)

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Notifications.
  3. Scroll down and select HeyPolo from the list of applications.
  4. Switch the Allow Notifications toggle to On.
  5. To ensure these alerts reach you even during quiet hours, enable the Allow Critical Alerts toggle. A system prompt will appear; tap Allow to confirm that these alerts will play a sound even when the device is muted or in Do Not Disturb mode.

On Android

NOTE: Because Android versions vary, these steps may differ slightly by manufacturer (e.g., Samsung, Google, or Xiaomi).

  1. Open Settings and go to Apps (or Applications).
  2. Find and tap on HeyPolo.
  3. Tap on Notifications.
  4. Ensure all HeyPolo notifications are turned On.
  5. Look for notification categories (often labeled as Alerts or Emergency). To ensure these alerts reach you even during quiet hours, tap the category and select Ignore Do Not Disturb or Set as Priority.

These alerts are delivered via push notifications and are designed to grab your attention even when you aren't actively using the app, so make sure notifications are turned on.

If you’re not getting alerts

  • Open the HeyPolo app, tap your Group name at the top, press the three dots, tap My visibility, and confirm the Dangerous Conditions toggle is enabled.

My Visibility settings open on the HeyPolo app with Dangerous conditions toggle highlighted.

  • On iOS 16 and later, check if a specific Focus Filter is explicitly silencing the HeyPolo app.
  • Ensure battery-saving settings aren't restricting HeyPolo, as this can prevent the app from sending instant push notifications.

Additional tips

  • For the most accurate protection, set your location permission to Always Allow. To learn more tips and tricks for accurate location, follow our Help Center guide.
  • If you are part of a Group, encourage your family members to follow these steps as well.
  • Make sure your device’s "Alert" volume is audible. While the app can bypass Do Not Disturb, it still relies on your device's speaker volume to ensure you hear the notification during the night. You can always disable these alerts under My visibility settings within the HeyPolo app.
