What is Risky Driving Habit Detection?

HeyPolo's Risky Driving Habit Detection flags these moments so you can understand your patterns behind the wheel, improve your driving, and learn about risks that could have happened. This article covers what counts as a "risky" event, how detection works, and where to review it.

Here’s what you need

  • Set Location Services to "Always" or "Precise" for accurate speed and motion tracking. And set your precision in HeyPolo to “More Precise.”
  • Enable unrestricted background processes and battery usage, and set your visibility to Precise in the app so HeyPolo can detect behavior throughout a full trip, not just when the app is open.

Here's how to use it

  1. Go to the "Driving" tab in your HeyPolo app.

  2. HeyPolo automatically analyzes each trip for common risk indicators, including:
    • Harsh braking - sudden, forceful deceleration.
    • Rapid acceleration - quick, aggressive speed increases.
    • Speeding - driving notably above the speed limit.
    • Distracted - phone motion patterns consistent with use while driving.
    • Harsh cornering - sharp, aggressive turns.

  3. After each trip, review flagged events under that trip's summary, including the approximate time and location where they occurred.
  4. Use the flagged patterns as a personal check-in - HeyPolo highlights trends over time rather than isolated one-off events.

Additional tips

  • A single flagged event (like one hard stop to avoid a hazard) isn't cause for concern - look at patterns over multiple trips instead.
  • Sharing these insights with your group is enabled by default and can be adjusted in your visibility settings by tapping the three circles near the family in the “My groups” section:

  • If your group has a newer driver, treat flagged habits as conversation starters, not a scoreboard.
