How is HeyPolo using my battery?

Introduction

We designed HeyPolo to offer peace of mind and seamless connection, and it needs to run in the background to do that. While any active app will use some battery, we've built HeyPolo to be as bright and power-efficient as possible, ensuring it minimizes its impact while maximizing your safety and connection.

Ways HeyPolo uses the battery

Your phone's location is determined using a mix of GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular data. HeyPolo intelligently manages these to balance accuracy with battery life:

NOTE: For HeyPolo to provide real-time updates and safety alerts, it needs to be active in the background. This way, HeyPolo ensures that your circle is always up-to-date and that the app will notify you if a loved one arrives at or leaves a designated place. As a result, forcing the app to close can actually cause it to use more battery when it has to restart all its services from scratch.

  1. Prioritizing Wi-Fi: When your phone connects to a Wi-Fi network (like at home or the office), HeyPolo can determine your ocation with very little power. HeyPolo prioritizes this method whenever available.
  2. Efficient GPS Use: GPS is powerful but uses more battery. HeyPolo's algorithm uses it efficiently, increasing update frequency when you're on the move and reducing it when you're stationary. As a result, the app works harder when it needs to (like during a commute) and rests when you do.
  3. Movement Detection: The app uses your phone's built-in, low-power motion sensors to detect movement. If you're not moving, HeyPolo significantly reduces how often it checks your location, saving considerable battery.

Additional tips

If you're looking to optimize your phone's overall battery life while using HeyPolo, here are a few suggestions:

  • Check your phone's battery usage stats. Both Android and iOS allow you to see exactly which apps are using the most battery. You can find this in the "Settings" app under "Battery." The settings will give you a clear picture of HeyPolo's actual usage compared to other apps.
  • Make sure you have a strong signal. In areas with poor cellular or GPS signals, your phone has to work harder to find its location, which uses more power. Following the steps in our guide on how to improve location accuracy can also help improve battery performance.
  • Remove HeyPolo from battery optimization. Removing battery optimization from heyPolo allows our innovative algorithm to manage power efficiently. For specific steps, see our article on how to turn off battery optimization.
